If you must eat between a Starch & a Protein meal choose Neutral snacks. During weight loss I also try to tip the scales (so to speak) in favor of veggies & cut back on Starches (simply because weight loss is quicker that way) so I tend to choose Neutral snacks.

If eating veggies plain doesn't appeal to you make up one the UnDiet Dips.
Especially during the winter months, but even during warmer seasons have pureed veggies on hand frozen into whatever sizes are convenient to the way you eat. I usually spray muffin tins with canola oil (olive oil doesn't work as well) & freeze the purees in those as that's a handy size for making individual soups or other veggies dishes. Either run the tins under warm water or let them sit for a bit to facilitate releasing them from the tins. Package them in labeled freezer bags. If I've added salt, pepper, or any other spices, including butter or oil to the puree I make mention of this in the label. One puree I like to always have on hand is Perfectly Neutral Mashed Cauliflower.

Saute up some Marinated Tofu. They're surprisingly delicious! This is a basic recipe which I use often as a sub for pasta, eggs, chicken, & polenta.

When you do serve dessert, instead of serving it immediately after dinner, wait at least 2 hours, preferably 3 & it won't interfere with the digestion of your dinner & it can take the place of an evening snack. Allowing dessert to serve as your evening snack will (hopefully) keep you from eating both dessert & an evening snack. Don't allow dessert to become an every day thing though. Sugar, even unprocessed sugars like raw honey or maple syrup, or date or maple sugar are still difficult to digest in combination with other foods (& a spoonful of honey mixed with date sugar isn't much of a dessert!). An evening snack of fresh Fruit or vegetables will make it much easier to achieve your weight goal or maintain your weight.

Use Neutral or Fruit snacks when you don't know what you'll be having for Dinner. That way you won't be facing a delicious fish dinner which you can't eat because you had a piece of bread an hour before. By the way if this does happen to you the best recourse is to eat just the salad & veggies. If you don't want anyone to ask why you're not eating the fish, cut it up & move it around your plate, at the end of the meal it will look as if you at least ate a few bites. If someone still asks you why you haven't eaten the fish tell them that you had a big lunch. Most people will accept that.
An aspirin a day keeps the fat at bay! Aspirin is a thermogenic. It revs up your metabolism so that you're running on a higher speed (but not like caffeine & diet pills which make you antsy & jittery). Aspirin won't give you more energy, just helps you burn calories at a faster rate. This is the very reason that an aspirin a day (that's one a day, no more than that) is beneficial for heart patients.
