Natural Kitty Litter

My friend Gail got tired of buying kitty litter, so she came up with a way to not only get free litter but save on the recycling fees her city charges to pick up recyclables. She starts by shredding papers she would normally have shredded anyway such as bank statements, bank credit card offers, etc., then she mixes in some shredded newspaper. When she first introduced this natural kitty litter to her cat she mixed the shredded paper with her normal kitty litter. Now, she just fills the kitty litter box with her shredded recycled paper and empties it daily. Brilliant!

I did this for my two cats for a few years! It works very well.

I did have to change the paper every other day.

It’s a great idea! But once you’ve changed the litter material, you have to be careful not to leave your shredding box open or office papers piled. Once kitty is accustomed to the shredded paper, she is a little more likely to take license in those areas. As an alternative, are some commercially-made pelleted-litters of recycled newspapers available that last longer than shreds, though they aren’t as thrifty as making your own. Good Mews is one that comes to mind.
