Silver Cleaner

Expired baking soda, clean used aluminum foil and a little salt make an excellent silver cleaner.

Place your tarnished silver in an old pan (the pan will turn dark so you don’t want to use one of your good pans). Pour in enough water to cover silver. Add 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt and a crumbled up ball of aluminum foil. Bring to a boil and allow to boil for one minute. Remove silver, wash and dry with a soft cloth.

Baking Soda Deodorant

Here’s another use for expired baking soda. Move it from the kitchen to your bathroom to use as deodorant. Use a powder puff to apply it under your arms as a natural deodorant. It’s just as effective as commercial deodorants.

Cooking Oil Fire-Starter

Save used cooking oil in a glass jar or can. Save used paper towels and napkins in a container nearby. When you’re ready for a barbecue or bonfire you have the makings for a handy fire-starter. Wad up a paper towel or napkin and soak it with cooking oil. Place it with your charcoal or kindling and light it. It will smoke a little, but it smells much better than lighter fluid, and your food will taste better too.

Tip: pack oil-soaked paper towels/napkins in a re-closeable tin for camping.
